Steve, let’s dive into something crucial for everyone – estate planning. Many people put it off, but why is it so important?
Steve Bliss
You’re right, estate planning often gets pushed aside, but it’s truly essential for protecting your loved ones and ensuring your wishes are honored. Consequently, a well-structured estate plan provides peace of mind knowing your assets will be distributed according to your desires. Moreover, it can minimize potential conflicts among family members and streamline the probate process, which can be complex and time-consuming.
I often meet with clients who express regret for not planning sooner. They realize that unexpected events can happen at any time, and having a plan in place removes a huge burden from their shoulders and those they care about most.
Reporter
That’s powerful advice. Today, we’re focusing on one specific aspect of estate planning: selecting an executor or trustee.
Steve Bliss
Selecting the right person for this role is crucial. The executor (for a will) or trustee (for a trust) is responsible for managing your estate after you pass away. They handle tasks like paying debts, filing taxes, and distributing assets to beneficiaries. Accordingly, it’s essential to choose someone trustworthy, organized, and capable of handling these responsibilities.
I encourage my clients to consider several factors: financial literacy, attention to detail, communication skills, and emotional maturity. It’s a significant responsibility, so the person needs to be up to the task.
One client, faced with a difficult family situation, chose her oldest daughter as executor. The daughter was incredibly organized and level-headed, which proved invaluable during a sensitive time. The process went smoothly thanks to her dedication and willingness to go the extra mile.

That’s a great example. Any common issues that arise when choosing an executor?
Steve Bliss
Sometimes, family dynamics can complicate things. It’s not uncommon for siblings or other relatives to have differing opinions on who should be executor. I always advise clients to have open conversations with potential candidates and ensure everyone understands the role’s responsibilities.
Remember that you can also name a successor executor in case your first choice is unable or unwilling to serve.
A 2021 study by Caring.com found that nearly 60% of Americans don’t have an estate plan, highlighting the widespread need for this essential service.
